August Meeting, Tuesday August 16 @ 7pm

The August meeting will take place at Mark and Carla Ewart’s home where they will share progress on their Cozy.  Their  address is 3509 West Country Club Blvd, Shoreacres. From 146, go east on Shoreacres Blvd.  Turn right at the second street, we're the third house.  The phone number is 281-867-9477.

Mark just got back from a trip to California, where he received a cockpit
tour of a Beech Starship... and some flying in a Piper Archer II.

Robert Harm’s Kitfox

Many of us got to fly Robert’s Kitfox at the last meeting.  It was very nice of him to allow so many of us to fly his plane.  Special thanks to Al Muller too for acting as Kitfox flight instructor and demo pilot.  I enjoyed my flight in the Kitfox and found that it handles fine in the air.  However, as a lot of people saw – I need to improve my landing technique.

People are always talking about putting turbines in homebuilts … and I came across this

The Innodyn turbine, weighs 188 lbs with accessories and cost around 28K new.  Models from 160 to over 200 horsepower at the same weight.  They want a hefty deposit before producing one for you!  Does this sound too good to be true?  They flew a supercub with this engine to Airventure but keep putting off delivery dates for customers.  Wouldn’t it be nice to run on jet fuel like the big guys.  I wonder if this is a converted APU?  The company makes it sound like they build the turbine themselves, but it just seems unlikely to me that such a shoestring operation could manufacture all the parts for this.  There is a cottage industry of people (homebuilders and hobbyist) that convert GPU and APU turbines for aircraft use.  Some “experts” on the web state bluntly that these APU are designed only for very specific duties cycles, temperature ranges, etc… and are not suited to aircraft use.  Anyway, I thought this was kind of neat.
